Apollo 11 crew preparation. Final preparations and spacesuit adjustments for the crew of the Apollo 11 mission on July 16th 1969. The crew for the first manned mission to land on the Moon consisted of Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin Buzz Aldrin. The Apollo 11 Saturn V rocket was launched from pad 39a at Kennedy Space Centre, Florida, USA. Armstrong and Aldrin landed on the moon on July 20th and collected lunar material for return to Earth. Collins remained in lunar orbit in the command module. They returned to Earth and landed in the Pacific Ocean on July 24th.

![Neil Armstrong stepping onto the Moon. Footage of US astronaut and Apollo 11 mission commander Neil Armstrong as he became the first person to step onto the surface of the Moon, taking his historic steps in the early hours (UTC) of 21 July 1969. He first jumped down to the lander footpad, and then tested the surface, and then stepped onto the Moon (shown at the end of the clip). At the point he first stepped on the Moon's surface, Armstrong declared his famous line: 'That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.' This footage was obtained with a slowscan TV camera mounted on the outside of the lander, and activated by Armstrong during his descent of the ladder. The original slow-scan television (SSTV) footage was lost by NASA, with only poorer quality scan conversion footage preserved in NTSC broadcast format. ![Neil Armstrong's first steps on the Moon, during the Apollo 11 mission. Neil Armstrong (1930-2012) descended the ladder on the Lunar Module at 02:56 UTC on 21st July 1969. As he stepped onto the surface he declared, \That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind\". Shortly afterwards, in this shot, he is collecting a contingency sample from the lunar surface with a long-handled trowel, in case the mission has to abort suddenly and leave the surface. The footage shows a rare glimpse of Neil's face seen through the clear visor, the gold reflective cover in its up position to give Armstrong a clearer view of what he is looking at. The gold visor gave the view a yellow tint. The footage was filmed by his colleague, mission pilot Edwin \"Buzz\" Aldrin."
